Learn spreadsheets
by actually using them.
Gridwise is a real spreadsheet that teaches you. Type formulas, make mistakes, and get told exactly what went wrong. No videos to sit through.
Videos teach you to watch Excel.
You learn a formula by typing it, getting it wrong, and fixing it. So that’s the whole method: a real sheet, a real task, and feedback the moment you press Enter.
A video course
- Watch someone else type for 45 minutes
- Pause, switch windows, try to copy it
- Get #VALUE! and no idea why
- Forget it by Friday
Gridwise
- Type into a real spreadsheet from the first minute
- Click cells to build formulas, with colored references like Excel
- Every mistake explained in plain English
- Spaced review brings back what you’re about to forget
Type the real formula
Autocomplete, argument hints and point-and-click ranges, just like the real thing.
Get told what went wrong
Not just a red X. Gridwise reads your formula and explains the actual mistake.

Questions, answered.
Do I need Excel installed?
No. Gridwise runs its own spreadsheet in your browser, on a laptop, tablet or phone.
Excel or Google Sheets?
Both. The formulas are nearly identical, and Gridwise shows the shortcuts and differences for whichever you pick.
I’m a total beginner. Is this for me?
Yes. The first lesson starts with typing = and clicking two cells. Most people finish it in under five minutes.
I said I was “proficient in Excel.” Can this get me there fast?
That’s exactly who we built it for. The core path covers what most office jobs and Excel tests expect: SUM, AVERAGE, COUNTIF, SUMIF, IF, VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP and absolute references.
I have an Excel test for a job next week. Can this help?
Yes. The test simulator gives you 12 timed questions with no hints, then a breakdown of what to practice. Every run uses fresh numbers, so you can take it as often as you like.
Can my company pay for it?
Yes. Teams get seat-based pricing, progress reports, and invoices.
How to learn Excel fast (without a single video)
Most people who need Excel need it for a reason: a new job, an interview, or a manager who just sent over a spreadsheet. Learning is fastest when you practice the exact skills those moments call for, in a real sheet, with instant feedback. Here’s the order we recommend, and the order Gridwise follows.
- Cell references, not numbers. Write
=D2*E2, not=4*12. When the data changes, your answer updates. - The everyday five. SUM, AVERAGE, MIN, MAX and COUNT cover a surprising share of real work.
- Conditional math. COUNTIF and SUMIF answer “how many” and “how much” for just the rows that match. Put conditions in quotes:
">4". - Logic. IF lets the sheet decide. AND and OR combine tests.
- Lookups. VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, and INDEX with MATCH find data anywhere in a table. With VLOOKUP, always end with FALSE for an exact match.
- Absolute references. The dollar signs in
$F$10keep a reference fixed when you fill a formula down. This is the single most common reason a copied formula “breaks.”
Why practice beats watching
Watching a video gives you the feeling of understanding. Typing the formula yourself, getting #N/A, and finding out why is what makes it stick. That’s why every Gridwise lesson is a task in a working spreadsheet, and every mistake gets a specific explanation: wrong range, missing quotes, a reference that moved when you filled down.
Excel vs. Google Sheets
The core formulas work the same way in both. The differences are mostly keyboard shortcuts and a few functions. Pick your app when you start, and Gridwise adjusts its tips and shortcut drills. You can switch at any time.
How long does it take?
Each lesson takes about five minutes. Ten to fifteen minutes a day gets most people through the core path in two to three weeks, which is enough for most office roles and pre-employment Excel tests.
